Ask the Editors

Hey all, just a reminder that we do an occasional "The Editors Answer" blog in response to questions sent to us. Anything at all you want to ask about writing, submissions, editing, publishing... Just remember that we really aren't experienced in areas like non-fiction or children's books, so although we can give generic advice, we can't provide specific information in some genres.

So send your questions to RedlinesDeadlines@gmail.com anytime.

Hello All - I'm going to Romanticon Oct 9 - 12 and I've scheduled an appointment with an editor. This will be my first meet with an editor. Please tell me the correct etiquette for such a meeting. Also, what do you like to hear when an unpublished author is pitching idea for a story to you? Should I have a finished story?

Let me correct something that I just submitted - when I ask what do you like to hear when someone is pitching to you? I mean - do you want to know the backstory, main characters, secondary characters, possible series. Things like that...

Thank you - any direction that you can give is greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine (really) submitted a manuscript to Ellora's Cave three months ago and hasn't heard anything yet. Your web site says that you will respond within two months. If you, or another publisher, doesn't respond within the timeframe they have stated, should the writer just move on and send it to another publisher? My friend is multi-published in both e-books and print, but not previously by Ellora's Cave.

I have yet to submit a manuscript to a publisher. Is it common for publishers to reject manuscripts without response? How is a writer to know how long to wait if stated timeframes aren't met?
